The amount of experience gained is based on the difference between your level and the level of the person you are attacking. I believe the maximum xp gained is 5, which happens if you successfully hit someone at least 2 levels greater than you. If you attack other kingdoms that are more than 4 levels below you, I believe you don't get any xp.

How to level up: gain experience points. You gain experience by winning battles, or by repelling attacks. The number of experience points you gain depends on the relative level difference between you and your opponent. -3 (or more) levels = 0 xp -2 levels = 1 xp -1 level = 2 xp same level = 3 xp +1 level = 4 xp +2 (or more) levels = 5 xp 8 out of 8 found this valuable.
